Thursday’s This & That

Outside of my window… the sky is a dreary grey and everything is wet from a morning rain.  It was so dark out this morning that I slept in an hour later than usual.
Around the house… my girls are munching breakfast at the table, chatting and giggling with each other. My mother-in-law’s cockatiel is adding his two cents with random chirps and calls. Britt Nicole’s new album, Gold, is playing.  Between the uplifting music and the coffee by my side, I should be fully awake in no time!
Highlights of the past week…
  • Finding a like-new pair of Dansko sandals at the thrift for $1.00.  They are snazzy and extremely comfortable!
  • Luna Blue, the baby of the family, learned how to ride a two wheeled bike without training wheels.  On so many occasions, I had tears come to my eyes thinking of how quickly our girls grow up on us!
  • Twice this week, our Kaya has shown incredible generosity towards her little sister.  Kaya has always been such a caring and giving girl and it blesses me to see her make decisions to give selflessly.
Upcoming plans… This weekend is the annual retreat for Compassion International Advocates!  This will be my third retreat since becoming an advocate and I just cannot wait. I love being in the fellowship of others who have a passion for this organization!  Tomorrow  night we will have a Fellowship Dinner open to advocates, sponsors and those looking to learn more about Compassion.  We’ll hear more about the program and also hear from a young man who went through the program as a child.
On Saturday, the day is set aside for advocates to learn the latest info about Compassion and encourage one another in steps we can take to share Compassion with others.  I will share about our conference next week!
Prayer requests… I cannot get too specific, but you may know our family is going through a difficult time.
The battle rages within us, moment by moment.  If I am not careful, I can get swallowed up in stress and worry and let it affect me emotionally and physically.  We’re continually reminding ourselves that we do not battle against flesh and blood.
The current radio series by Chip Ingram of Living on the Edge has been extremely helpful.  If you’re in the midst of a battle right now, or if you see one on the horizon, you might want to click here and take a listen to Diabolical.
Some photos to share from the week…
We received a new picture of little Madina from Uganda this week.
We were also blessed with an updated picture of Precious in Ghana! I put together a quick side-by-side to show just how much she has grown and changed. I see a girl who is confident and strong in this newest picture.
Well, off to finish my coffee and get started on this day! I hope that your day is blessed and the upcoming weekend is a wonderful one for you!

Wordless Wednesday

March in New York has been surprising! The windows are open, the crocuses have bloomed, trees are budding, flip-flops have been brought out of storage…  Lovely!

A Giveaway!

First, I want to thank all of the readers that clicked through my previous posts and looked at the children waiting more than six months for a sponsor.  Because Blogging From The Boonies brought the most traffic to the Compassion site last week, I won a gift certificate to the Compassion Store! (If you haven’t already, I urge you to take a minute and check out the awesome wares that can be found in the online Compassion Store! )

To show my gratitude, I would like to have a little giveaway for a wonderful book called A Place at the Table : 40 Days of Solidarity with the Poor.

You can read more about this book by clicking this link.

And here is a video about the book.

To enter to win, please visit the Compassion International website and choose one specific child to pray for over the course of the next week.

Leave a comment below and tell me the name and country of the child you’ve chosen to pray over or you could also share a link to the child’s profile. Your comment will be worth one entry!

You can get a second entry by sharing the link to that child’s page on Compassion’s website. You may share the child on Facebook, Twitter, on your blog or by emailing your friends. Come back and leave a second comment telling me how you shared the child.

I will draw one name on Saturday the 17th and will mail you a copy of the book!  This giveaway is open to US residents only.

Thanks so much for your support and for praying over a Compassion child waiting for a sponsor!

Thursday’s This & That

Outside the windows… rain is falling and the sky is grey.  The temps are unusually warm though. I spotted sunny yellow crocuses popping up in our yard this morning, which just blows me away.  Our winter was so mild that I only had to shovel snow three times!

Around the house… the girls are playing happily upstairs.  Jay is home from work and tackling paperwork in his office.  My mother-in-law moved in with us this past weekend and she is settling into the just-finished guest room. Her cockatiel, Mikey, is singing in the living room.

In the kitchen… I am thinking of baking something today.  I haven’t decided if it will be muffins or maybe brownies, but it will be something to satisfy a craving for sweet.

I am looking forward to… a roller skating party this weekend!  What fun! I am also looking forward to a Compassion International sponsor dinner and advocate retreat at the end of this month. (If you’re in the NY/PA region and are interested in details, please contact me!)

I am hoping… to be able to schedule a Compassion Sunday at our church this spring. I always get a little nervous when I think about hosting the event and speaking in front of the church, but the Holy Spirit always guides my words and does the work for me if I am obedient.  Are you having a Compassion Sunday event?

I am thinking of…  little Fatao, the boy I posted about a few days ago.  I am hoping that many people hear his story and are able to give financially or in prayer.  If you haven’t heard of Fatao, please click here to read more. Let’s spread his story to our friends and family!

Lastly, a couple of pictures to share…

This is the beautiful area where we live. So blessed to be near these rolling hills and gorgeous lake!

My girls enjoy having some time to create art.  Here, they are making paintings for Grandma’s new room.

Blessings, everyone!

The Wait Continues

Over the last few weeks, I have been checking the list of children who have been waiting the longest for a sponsor.

I watched that list get smaller and smaller, rejoicing as the number dwindled.

Then, yesterday, the list suddenly got much larger.  Compassion must have added more children to the online system and hundreds of them have been waiting over six months for the news that they have been chosen.

Some of the children listed have been waiting over 300 days.

(Some have asked me how a new child on the Compassion website could possibly be waiting so long.  Many children are not on the Compassion website.  Instead, their packets have been printed and are out travelling with an event such as a concert. Some packets are out with Compassion Advocates.)

As I asked before, will you join me in looking over the children who have been waiting longest and take a few minutes to pray over them?

(Full disclosure: Clicking through the above link may help me win a gift certificate to the Compassion Store. Every click helps!)

Maybe God is moving your heart to end one child’s wait today.

Tuesday Tidbits

Click here to go directly to the donation page!

  • With Easter just a little over a month away, I wanted to remind you that Easter cards and packages for your sponsored child should be sent out as soon as possible.  Correspondence takes 3 – 8 weeks to get to our children around the world. Items sent this week may still arrive before the holiday, depending on where your child lives.

  • Please take a second to hop over to the Blogging From The Boonies Facebook page!  There, you will find links to my most recent blog posts, discussion about sponsoring and you can even message me directly if you have questions! I look forward to seeing you there!

Mail Call!

It has been a while since I have shared a Mail Call post.  Life has been hectic and we’ve have the usual slow down of letters that happens after the first of the year.

Thursday, we were blessed to find an envelope from Compassion International in our mailbox.  I was excited to see that it was one of the bigger envelopes, too. Usually those bring letters and a photo as well.

I tore into the envelope right in the driveway, like I do with most mail from Compassion.

Our letter was from Yishak in Ethiopia! Stapled to the letter I found two beautiful photos!

Yishak turned 14 during the summer and these pictures were taken then. I have seen other pictures of sponsored children cutting a large piece of bread like this.  I believe this bread is called Dabo, and it is a part of many celebrations.

The next photo brought tears to my eyes.

I think that this family is just stunningly beautiful. The tenderness shown in this photo is so sweet and lovely.

The last week has been emotionally hard and heart-wrenching for me, but a letter and photos from our family in Ethiopia brought some joy to my soul.

Have you heard from any of your sponsored children recently?  I hope that the post-Christmas letter drought is passing and that you’ve been blessed at your mailbox.
