Thursday’s This & That

Outside of the window… I couldn’t ask for a better day.  The brutal heat of high summer has passed.  Nights are cool and the days are comfortably warm.  The weather is just perfect!

Around the house… my girls are happily playing with some of Luna’s freshly opened birthday gifts.

I am thinking back to… five years ago this morning, we got our first glimpse of sweet Luna Blue.  Twenty six hours after labor began, after after laboring at home and hoping to have a homebirth VBAC, we had to transfer to the hospital due to a prolapsed umbilical cord.

Despite the worry as we drove the the hospital and the fact that I had to have another cesarean, I look back at my labor as one of the best times of my life.

My first birth experience with Kaya was so different.  So clinical, so unsupported.  I was uneducated and inexperienced and the hospital staff was distanced and removed.

Laboring at home with Luna was peaceful, comfortable and stress free.  Our amazing doula provided support to myself and also guided Jay in how to help me.

Sixteen hours into my labor, once the sun had set, I rode out my contractions in an inflatable pool under the stars.  I remember the crackle of a nearby fire and the peeping of night frogs as the soundtrack to that moment in my life.  It really was amazing.

Even though I didn’t get the chance to have the homebirth I desired, I still treasure the experience.

My first glimpse of our sweet girl.

And here she is today!

In other news…  We are slowly getting back into the homeschooling groove and one of our first projects is raising Monarch caterpillars.  My girls are thoroughly enjoying the process and observing the growth of our five babies.

In just a week and a half, these little guys have grown and grown at rates that are hard to comprehend. I can’t wait to observe the incredible process of changing into a chrysalis and then emerging as a butterfly!

In the coming weeks, we will ease back into a little more sit-down work each day as we get back into other subjects.  Last Sunday I brought home a bunch of books from our church’s homeschool lending library and my girls surprised me by eagerly sitting down and reading through some of their history, geography and science books already!

Well, it is time to motivate and get some things done around the house and enjoy some time with our birthday girl.  I hope you all have a wonderful day!
